WFC Presents: Fights at the sleep train pavilion
If you don’t know already I’m an athlete and an avid fan of mixed martial arts. Could be because I’m a ninja but I’d like to think because it’s exciting to see one of the fastest growing sports in the world today (thanks Dana White!). So when I heard that World FC was putting on a sanctioned fight for the first time in Concord I had to jump in and see how I could help out! Here’s how the event went from my perspective.
It was early, the fighters started walking up towards this giant tent where they were to wait patiently until they would register and be weighted in. As we sat there a fighter started watching a movie off his iphone and a few other fighters circled him to enjoy the movie together. They weighted in and then left for a few hours until they needed to be back for the check in, wrap ups, a quick rules meeting and then it would be the first bout. As I left I noticed there was still so much to do and I wasn’t sure if they were going to get everything up on time.
I came back a few hours later and I could smell the food getting started in the BBQ tent, I noticed all the vendors that came out to the fight; there was the UFC Gym, there was a few food kiosks, a MMA memorabilia booth, and a few up and coming as well as local MMA brands (such as: Yoda, Down2Brawl, Fight Music and many others!). But I would have to say that I was most impressed by the OH YEAH booth. Normally protein drinks and snacks engineered towards to fuel your workout and to build muscle but taste and flavor are put on the backburner. These products were creatively manufactured to have your taste buds have a pleasing experience as well as deliver the same great muscle building protein. It truly had unmatched taste. I thought I was drinking a milkshake and the protein bars tasted better than snickers without that chalky aftertaste that so many protein bars tend to have. Props to the makers who found a way to synthesize great taste and a power packed protein meal!
The first bout came, and for the next hour and a half there was the crowd drawing into each performance as every fighter came out to make a name for themselves. Team Black from Gracie Fight Team had an overall impressive performance, and may have been robbed in a bout or two but overall they held the heart of the crowd with every blow and submission. There was some great young talent that came out and I smile to think that possibly a few of these fighters may one day become a professional fighting in the UFC, Strikeforce, or another great promoter! All in all It was an amazing night of fights and I’m thankful for opportunities like these where raw talent can come out and get experience. Who knows maybe even one day I’ll be shooting for the UFC!
