In a society where we count a pet as half a kid (I.E. family of 4.5), it’s plain to see that animals play a large role in society (shoot pretty soon I’m pretty sure they’ll have enough rights to vote!). But capturing an animal in its environment even simpler your own pet, it can be challenging if you don’t know where to start.
The great thing about shooting nature is that if you don’t think the plant is green enough, you can saturate it a bit more in post-production. Just bump up the contrast and vibrance to get fuller and richer colors and shadows. This works well on some animals as well but you have to play around in postproduction to get the colors you are looking for.
Also Nature in itself is usually beautiful and very photogenic, photography is finding the beauty in what you shoot. I like to work with close ups, when you get close and personal you begin to capture more detail on a subject. Sometimes it’s the whole landscape that you want to capture, sometimes its just one small part of a plant you want the viewer to pick up on. When you are shooting you need to go in with a game plan. What is it that you are really trying to show the viewer? Look at the details of the scene, what do you like most about it? What are some of the areas that you don’t want in your image? Instead of spending time taking a simple image, and spending hours editing, take those five minutes to remove maybe trash from the area, or to add more leaves to a scene, maybe to allow your camera to focus more on one part of the subject.
There are so many things I can talk about for any shoot but for these images look at the placement of the images that I took. Where are your eyes drawn? Are there any distracting things in the images that take away from what I am trying to display? Are all the images in the dead center? A lot of times people like to snap pictures off and hope for one good shot. I don’t spray and pray, I find angles and position my camera at a height and distance that keeps what I want in focus and bringing the rest of the background out of focus. This is called Bokeh I can’t spend too much time talking about that but the link will give you an idea of how I get those images. What I want to go over briefly is what’s called the Rule of Thirds. Learn to compose images, place an object in a way where you will get the greatest composition and your images will grow to a new dimension by the first time you apply these two principles, which I look to go into more detail on later. These two principles of photography are: Bokeh, and Composition or the Rule of Thirds.
